A small collection of papers of the Ward family of Shrewsbury, Mass., containing family correspondence between Artemas, his wife Sarah, and their sons Ithamar and Thomas W. Ward. There are also a few items written to Ward as commander of the American forces in Boston (1775-76), including a letter from George Washington of 16 June 1776, and a letters patent for land signed by John Q. Adams.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff.
